Good Stuff
Have you ever asked yourself when buying food/spice ingredients, where can I get the GOOD STUFF? We at Nordic Spice go the extra mile to get YOU the GOOD STUFF.
Our Basil for example comes from the fertile fields of the river Nile delta in Egypt. This has been the case for many other herbs like mint, and marjoram for thousands of years. But we are fussy and want high quality. The Basil we use comes from the Beni Suef area about a 2 hour journey south-west of Cairo. Here the weather is perfect for growing herbs – sunny, very hot and humid giving great harvests. We actually go to the fields to see firsthand what the farming environment is like and to see that the crop meets our high standards.
Every year in late February or early March the Basil seeds are set in nurseries. The young plants are transported to the fields in April and the harvesting starts in early July. Handpicking the leaves ensure good quality harvests every 20 days until mid-September. This labour intensive process gives a strong and bushier crop.
Yields are placed in open mesh baskets to air dry in the sun to keep as much as possible of the deep green colour we require. Later the Basil is sent to Cairo for sorting and heat treatment in cotton bags. After treatment the Basil is packed in paper bags which we have shipped too our factories in Spain & Sweden for blending etc.
Wherever we source products we travel to check that everything is to the quality and standards we require. Whether it's India, China, Spice Islands, Africa, Europe or the Americas our buyers are there on the ground making sure everything is they way we want it to be. We hope this is the way you want it too.
